Why I Help People Manage Their Stress

Stress has been part of my professional life for decades. I’ve worked as a Nurse for 38 years, most of that time caring for children with complex medical needs at home. Before nursing, I was a teacher of emotionally handicapped children. In both roles, I saw the heavy toll that stress takes — not just on patients, but on families and caregivers too.

Over the years, I realized something important: resilience doesn’t come from “toughing it out.” It comes from having the right support, tools, and mindset. That’s what led me to become a certified life coach and stress management consultant.

Now, I work with people who are overwhelmed by caregiving, work demands, or personal struggles, helping them create real relief and lasting change. My goal is simple: to help you stress less and live more.

My Story

I was born the second of four children. My dad was career Army, so we were moving frequently, seeing many areas of the world. It was at the age of seven that I experienced a life changing event. During eye surgery, I had a near death experience in which I was dead for about four and a half minutes. That event has stayed with me all these years. (See John’s NDE.)

As a young child, I was bullied on a regular basis until I wrestled varsity in high school. I had to work my way through college, eventually getting my B.A. in Special Education. Teaching children with behavioral issues was both a joy and challenge that I treasured. I married Debbie, literally the woman of my dreams. A serious motorcycle accident a few months later led to us moving to the Pittsburgh area. I studied nursing and soon found that home care pediatrics was what I enjoyed the most. Most of my patients have been bedridden, on a ventilator and with a feeding tube.

It was the families, especially the parents of the patients for whom I was providing nursing care that brought me to see the great need for stress management coaching. So in 2015, I became a Certified Life Coach with Stress Management Certification. A few years later, I became aware of what some of the best coaches were accomplishing and upgraded my skills through ICF (International Coaches Federation) accredited programs. It gives me great satisfaction to watch a client experience “aha moments” as they realize the changes they are achieving in their lives.
